MODELLING AUTONOMOUS AGENTS IN A MULTI-AGENT WORLD

The theme of this ninth Workshop is MULTI-AGENT SYSTEM ENGINEERING. The
choice of MAS engineering as the central theme of MAAMAW'99 underlines
the need of focusing on the study of the pragmatics of multi-agent
system development This involve: (i) understanding the process of
incorporating agent technology for building robust, and secure large
scale applications;
(ii) developing new methodologies, new methods and new tools
facilitating the construction, the management, and the evolution of
innovative agent-based systems.
Providing pragmatic engineering solutions according to industrial
demands is a new challenge for the MAS research community. There is a
number of open issues that might focus the discussions of MAAMAW'99.
Fundamental issues include: new models, new architectures, and/or new
formalisms to deal with aspects like robustness, security, fault
tolerance, performance,
continuous operation, management, mobility, etc. Engineering and
application issues include: emerging MAS methodologies- specification,
design implementation, testing validation, deployment, reuse, etc. -
standards, testbeds, benchmarking, MAS /Distributed systems/legacy
system integration, MAS mobility, etc.
Workshop topics included but are not limited to :

Emotional agents implementation

Cooperation, coordination, and multi-agent planning

Tools and environments for MAS development
Experiences on MAS development and deployment
Original papers in English describing innovative approaches, original
applications, and empirical evaluations illustrating the progression of
ideas and techniques, as well as. 'Vision' papers showing the potential
of MAS are welcome.
MAAMAW Olympics.
MAAMAW also recognises that the rapid development of the area calls for
special attendance to be given to MAS applications, which has led to the
reinstatement of the MAAMAW Olympics.

THE MAAMAW OLYMPICS
A prize will be awarded for the most interesting multi-agent system
demonstrated at the workshop.
Intending participants contemplating preparing a demonstration (software
and hardware) should contact the organisational chair to ensure that
appropriate equipment is available.

01 feb. -- Deadline for submission.
29 mar. -- Deadline for notification to authors of acceptance /
rejection.
29 apr. -- Deadline for reception of final papers.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURES
Papers may be accepted for regular presentation or for poster
presentation. The proceedings including all accepted full papers will be
handed out during registration, published as a volume of the Lecture
Notes in AI series of Springer-Verlag. Authors could already check the
back of any volume of the Lecture Notes in AI for format instructions.

MAAMAW-99 Travel Support for AgentLink Members
AgentLink is Europe's ESPRIT-funded Network of Excellence for
agent-based computing (see http://www.AgentLink.org/). As part of its
research promotion activities, AgentLink has agreed to provide some
financial support for AgentLink members with full accepted papers at
MAAMAW-99. This support aims to cover the cost of registration, travel,
and subsistence for the workshop. Note that support will be limited to
one person per accepted paper, and will *only* be available to
*AgentLink members* with *full* accepted papers (i.e., *not* posters).

VENUE AND LOCAL ORGANISATION
Valencia, a city of Spain, is the Capital of the Valencian Community. It
is situated on the banks of the Turia river, very close of the
river-mouth. Valencia constitutes one of the most important industrial
nucleus in Spain, only bettered by Barcelona and Madrid. It was founded
in the year 138 as a secondary Roman Colony (Valentia
Edetanorum).Valencia and its environs constitute a first rate tourist
centre in both infrastructure and alternatives for the discerning
visitor. Of historical interest yet cosmopolitan, the city has grown and
adapted to the times.
Universidad Polit残nica de Valencia, Valencia Polytechnic is a young
institution, having been in existence for 25 years. The first units of
the Polytechnic, now nearly a hundred years old, were the Industrial
Engineering Schools of Alcoy and Valencia. Later the School of
Agriculture (1959) and Architecture (1966) were founded forming the
nucleus of the Polytechnic Institute (1968). During
the 1968-69 academic year the Civil Engineering and Industrial
Engineering Schools were established.
In Valencia you can visit the IVAM (Valencian Institute of Modern Art),
the Planetarium, the Concert Hall, the Centers of Craftwork and design,
the numerous museums, such as the Fine Arts Museum, the Archeological
Museum and the Paleontology Museum, form the main cultural and artistic
centers in this city, which while it contemplates its history, looks
towards its future. You can see monuments like "Micalet" constructed in
14th century, the silk exchange ("La llotja") a esplendid late-Gothic
building, the Serranos towers that formed part of the defensive walls of
the city, and so on.
