In between computer science and biology there are several disciplines that on one hand use models, techniques and tools devised in computer science for addressing biological questions, and on the other hand design and develop engineered system adopting the biological phenomena as a source of inspiration. Among the huge quantity of phenomena to be considered, the morphogenesis of live organisms owns interesting and complex characteristic: from a set of basic mechanisms the system is able to self-organise in robust spatial structures. Such an emergent behaviour makes the morphogenesis a very changeling case study for testing different computational methods so to give a contribution in its understanding and, at the same time, it is a rich source of inspiration for designing computational systems that must develop spatial self-organising properties.
