This book constitutes the proceedings of the 1st International Workshop on Programming Multi-Agent Systems held in Melbourne, Australia in July 2003 in conjunction with AAMAS 2003, the 2nd International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. Eight papers were selected among the fifteen submitted, and three leading researchers working in industry were invited to contribute.
