In this paper we discuss the current challenges and directions in the research area at the intersection of intelligent software agents, Virtual Reality, and Augmented Reality. We present a preliminary review on the literature on the topic, that is not an end in itself, but rather a means to get an initial understanding of the current trends. Some gaps and challenges emerge from the review: they are discussed more in-depth, albeit less systematically, with the goal of identifying relevant research directions that may be explored in the future.
