ESOA ran from 2003 as a workshop of AAMAS, on engineering applications whose global properties emerge from purely local interactions. With E4MAS it fed into EEMMAS in 2007 and ECOSOA in 2008. Andrea Omicini served on the programme committee of the first four editions.
