Workshop on Software Engineering Challenges for Ubiquitous Computing
Lancaster, UK, 01/06/2006–02/06/2006

The goal of ubiquitous computing is systems unobtrusively integrated into the environment, constantly available and intuitive to operate — a scalable fabric of seamlessly connected devices from embedded sensors to wearable computers. Research had produced novel devices, infrastructures and applications, but very little on the fundamental software engineering challenges, leaving open how to ensure such systems fulfil their intended purpose, how to trust them to perform as intended, and how to produce them efficiently and economically — a serious gap once the applications become business critical. This two-day workshop, sponsored by the UK Ubiquitous Computing Network, was devoted mostly to discussion of those four goals rather than to presentation of past work.

topics of interest
  • Methods, tools and notations addressing both software engineering and ubiquitous computing concerns
  • System models and specifications
  • Development processes
  • Safety and reliability aspects
  • Evaluation, validation, verification and testing of ubiquitous computing systems
  • Hardware/software integration
