International Workshop on Semantic Extensions to Middleware: Enabling Large Scale Knowledge Applications

In large scale systems, data and program heterogeneity is a classical problem to which semantic technologies are often offered as the answer — while the classical answer to non-semantic integration has been middleware, providing data and process mediation, coordination and composition. As semantics moved into the data and process layers, the middleware layer needed extensions too: not only to support knowledge mediation and coordination but to provide functionality that only becomes possible once the data and processes being integrated are machine processable. SEMELS addressed that need, with one session dedicated to life science, healthcare and emergency management applications. It ran at the OnTheMove Federated Conferences and Workshops, and its proceedings appeared in Springer LNCS.
