2nd International Workshop on Middleware for Grid Computing
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 18/10/2004

As network performance outpaced computational power and storage capacity, a new paradigm evolved to enable the sharing and coordinated use of geographically distributed resources — supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, special devices and services, clustered and used as one. Controlling so broad a base of resources is the job of a middleware layer, and MGC was the workshop that looked at grid systems from exactly that perspective, bringing together the classic grid middleware tradition, object-oriented and component middleware, and service-oriented middleware. The second edition added topics that had emerged since 2003 — QoS strategies and protocols, virtualization, wireless grids, data grid middleware, semantic grid middleware, dependability and fault tolerance, managing information. It drew forty-eight submissions, of which fifteen full papers and nine posters were accepted; papers were published in the ACM Digital Library and selected ones invited to Concurrency and Computation.
