A special session on multi-agent systems held during the 3rd Indian International Conference on Artificial Intelligence. Its call framed multi-agent systems as the macro-systems whose autonomous agents pursue individual objectives while interacting in a common environment, and pointed at the crucial role agent techniques had come to play in ambient intelligence, pervasive and ubiquitous computing, complex systems, grid computing, service-oriented computing and the semantic web. Accepted papers appeared in the conference proceedings under the title of the session.
