MAAMAW was the European workshop on multi-agent systems, held regularly in Western Europe from 1989 and deliberately kept small — a limited audience, a convivial site, interdisciplinary grounding and a large place for discussion. Selected papers appeared as *From Reaction to Cognition*, Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence 957 (Springer, 1995, ISBN 3-540-60155-4).
