MAAMAW was the European workshop on multi-agent systems, held regularly in Western Europe from 1989 and deliberately kept small — a limited audience, a convivial site, interdisciplinary grounding and a large place for discussion. Selected papers appeared as *Artificial Social Systems*, Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence 830 (Springer, 1994, ISBN 3-540-58266-5) — the first MAAMAW volume in LNAI.
