The fifth Congress of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence, held in Rome and organised into eleven scientific sessions and one demo session, with 88 papers submitted. The proceedings appeared as “AI*IA 97: Advances in Artificial Intelligence”, edited by Maurizio Lenzerini, Lecture Notes in Computer Science 1321, Springer, 1997, ISBN 3-540-63576-9. The volume is dedicated to Domenico Catarci, who died a few days before the programme committee meeting.
