Cognitive stigmergy is a paradigm for indirect coordination between agents, it allows to produce indirect feedback, modifying a shared space. It differs from traditional stigmergy, like ant swarms (in which feedback is defined by pheromone release), since in cognitive stigmergy the environment is enriched with structured information including intentionality, it's a shared memory. This project builds upon the research conducted by Ricci, Omicini and Viroli, aiming to explore the potential of cognitive stigmergy within the design of a multi-agent system (MAS) for the coordination of autonomous vehicles.

The system defines an environment, populated by agents (autonomous vehicles) that have to cohexist in traffic, avoiding collisions, complying with traffic rules and coordinating in a decentralized manner.

The work adopts an experimental perspective, providing an architecture that enables the automatic generation of dynamic maps and the simulation of diverse scenarios. Although primarily a proof of concept, the system highlights the potential of cognitive stigmergy as a viable approach for decentralized traffic management, while leaving room for further theoretical insights and future experimental validation in a relatively underexplored research area.
