This paper introduces the Special Issue of the Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems on Foundations, Advanced Topics and Industrial Perspectives of Multi-Agent Systems. This special issue collects four articles dealing with some of the main issues that arose during the three Technical Forum Group meetings held in 2004 and 2005, which were organised and sponsored by the European FP6 Coordination Action AgentLink III.
