Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an invaluable tool across nu-
merous aspects of our lives, profoundly influencing various fields, includ-
ing healthcare. Within healthcare, disciplines such as dermatology stand
to benefit significantly from the adoption of automated techniques to sup-
port the visual examination of patients. However, these advancements
are challenged by the diverse presentations of skin diseases across dif-
ferent skin tones, underscoring the need for diverse datasets to train AI
models effectively and strategies to mitigate the risk of misdiagnosis. Ad-
ditionally, building a general-use dataset is particularly difficult due to
the varying regulations on the use of medical images, which often restrict
data sharing and impose ethical and legal constraints. This study aims
to conduct a systematic literature review to evaluate the current state of
the art in this critical area.
