@article{ed-user-interaction-manifesto,
abstract = {There is a no-man's land between how the Graphical User Interfaces are typically conceived, designed and engineered in desktop applications and mobile apps, and what users actually expect: it's where the users' experience, expectations, training, habits, mental attitude come into play. New software versions add features, change the GUI layout, behavior and environment for innovation and marketing reasons, but in doing so they often disregard the value of the user experience: all the user can do is accept the new situation and trying to adapt. To make things worse, customization options are usually limited when it comes to restoring the previous environment, and downgrading restrictions in software licenses also apply. Background services may also start at the worst time, monopolizing the system against the user's will, causing frustration and possibly more serious problems due to service unavailability. In short, there's a grey cross area in software design and deployment where the user is not fully respected as a person whose experience is intrinsically a value worth preserving. In this paper we analyze and discuss some common situations from different scenarios, and exploit them to extract some golden rules for a more respected software user – the Respected User Manifesto.},

@article{butlers-springerplus3,
abstract = {Many efforts today aim to energy saving, promoting the user's awareness and virtuous behavior in a sustainability perspective. Our houses, appliances, energy meters and devices are becoming smarter and connected, domotics is increasing possibilities in house automation and control, and ambient intelligence and assisted living are bringing attention onto people's needs from different viewpoints.Our assumption is that considering these aspects together allows for novel intriguing possibilities. To this end, in this paper we combine home energy management with domotics, coordination technologies, intelligent agents, ambient intelligence, ubiquitous technologies and gamification to devise novel scenarios, where energy monitoring and management is just the basic brick of a much wider and comprehensive home management system. The aim is to control home appliances well beyond energy consumption, combining home comfort, appliance scheduling, safety constraints, etc. with dynamically-changeable users' preferences, goals and priorities. At the same time, usability and attractiveness are seen as key success factors: so, the intriguing technologies available in most houses and smart devices are exploited to make the system configuration and use simpler, entertaining and attractive for users. These aspects are also integrated with ubiquitous and pervasive technologies, geo-localization, social networks and communities to provide enhanced functionalities and support smarter application scenarios, hereby further strengthening technology acceptation and diffusion.Accordingly, we first analyse the system requirements and define a reference multi-layer architectural model - the Butlers architecture - that specifies seven layers of functionalities, correlating the requirements, the corresponding technologies and the consequent value-added for users in each layer. Then, we outline a set of notable scenarios of increasing functionalities and complexity, discuss the structure of the corresponding system patterns in terms of the proposed architecture, and make this concrete by presenting some comprehensive interaction examples as comic strip stories. Next, we discuss the implementation requirements and how they can be met with the available technologies, discuss a possible architecture, refine it in the concrete case of the TuCSoN coordination technology, present a subsystem prototype and discuss its properties in the Butlers perspective.},

abstract = {Genomic annotations describing functional features of genes and proteins through controlled terminologies and ontologies are extremely valuable, especially for computational analyses aimed at inferring new biomedical knowledge. Thanks to the biology revolution led by the introduction of the novel DNA sequencing technologies, several repositories of such annotations have becoming available in the last decade; among them, the ones including Gene Ontology annotations are the most relevant. Nevertheless, the available set of genomic annotations is incomplete, and only some of the available annotations represent highly reliable human curated information. In this paper we propose a novel representation of the annotation discovery problem, so as to enable applying supervised algorithms to predict Gene Ontology annotations of different organism genes. In order to use supervised algorithms despite labeled data to train the prediction model are not available, we propose a random perturbation method of the training set, which creates a new annotation matrix to be used to train the model to recognize new annotations. We tested the effectiveness of our approach on nine Gene Ontology annotation datasets. Obtained results demonstrated that our technique is able to improve novel annotation predictions with respect to state of the art unsupervised methods.},

@inproceedings{markovchain-kdir2015,
abstract = {Sentiment classification of textual opinions in positive, negative or neutral polarity, is a method to understand people thoughts about products, services, persons, organisations, and so on. Interpreting and labelling opportunely text data polarity is a costly activity if performed by human experts. To cut this labelling cost, new cross domain approaches have been developed where the goal is to automatically classify the polarity of an unlabelled target text set of a given domain, for example movie reviews, from a labelled source text set of another domain, such as book reviews. Language heterogeneity between source and target domain is the trickiest issue in cross-domain setting so that a preliminary transfer learning phase is generally required. The best performing techniques addressing this point are generally complex and require onerous parameter tuning each time a new source-target couple is involved. This paper introduces a simpler method based on the Markov chain theory to accomplish both transfer learning and sentiment classification tasks. In fact, this straightforward technique requires a lower parameter calibration effort. Experiments on popular text sets show that our approach achieves performance comparable with other works.},
