The scale of future augmented worlds can range from small environments and individual augmented artifacts to large augmented realities and aggregates, including buildings and cities. Intelligent agents and related technologies provide a natural way to model the citizens inhabiting the digital side of these augmented worlds, whether as the souls of smart or augmented objects, the smart assistants of human users, or distributed and situated teams supporting human coordination and cooperation. Augmented- and mixed-reality frameworks, together with pervasive computing and the Internet of Things (IoT), represent the enabling technologies upon which agent-oriented layers are built. The objective of the meeting is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussing all aspects of agent-based augmented worlds, from their conceptual and theoretical foundations to their design, engineering, and application in specific domains.
The workshop aims to explore the impact of these augmented worlds on making individual and collective human and agent actions more effective; enhancing human and agent reasoning, imagination, learning, and sociality; reshaping activities and processes; and transforming the physical environments in which such worlds are instantiated. It also considers how the affordances and cognitive ergonomics of objects can be made richer and more proactive. Agent-based augmented worlds can serve as laboratories for exploring novel forms of human augmentation—beyond reality augmentation—across dimensions such as cognition and sociality. They can also support the study of novel forms of interaction, enabling humans to communicate and cooperate, either explicitly or implicitly, with other humans and with the intelligent agents that populate and shape these augmented worlds.
