1st International Workshop on Middleware for Grid Computing
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 17/06/2003

As network performance outpaced computational power and storage capacity, a new paradigm evolved to enable the sharing and coordinated use of geographically distributed resources — supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, special devices and services, clustered and used as one. Controlling so broad a base of resources is the job of a middleware layer, and MGC was the workshop that looked at grid systems from exactly that perspective, bringing together the classic grid middleware tradition, object-oriented and component middleware, and service-oriented middleware. The first edition saw sixteen technical presentations on classic grids, object-oriented technologies, service-based grids, OGSA, agent grids, interactive grids, grid economy and scheduling, and portlets; revised versions of the papers were invited to a special issue of Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience (vol. 16 no. 5, 2004).
