 @article{digitaltwins-ieeeic2021,
    abstract = {Healthcare is a primary domain where digital twins are being explored and applied. In this context, the main perspective explored in research and industry insofar is about the virtualization of standalone assets—such as devices, structures, and patients—in a digital twin as-an-application perspective. However, in the real world, these assets are often related to each other, taking part in the same processes and physical ecosystem. In this article, we discuss a vision in which digital twins are used to virtualizing contexts and situations involving multiple related strategic assets of a health organization, resulting in ecosystems of digital twins based on a digital-twin as-a-service perspective. Trauma management is considered as a specific concrete real-world example; nevertheless, open ecosystems of digital twins appear to be a blueprint for virtualizing complex physical realities applicable across different application domains.},

 @article{croatti-himas2020,
    abstract = {A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical asset reproducing its data model, its behaviour and its communication with other physical assets. They act as a digital replica for the physical object or process they represent, providing nearly real-time monitoring and evaluation without being in close proximity. Although most of their concrete applications can be found mainly in the industrial context, healthcare represents another relevant area where digital twins can have a disruptive impact. The main research question tackled by this paper is about the integration of digital twins with agents and Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) technologies in healthcare, discussing what are the benefits and how such an integration could be realised. After providing an overview of the application of digital twins in healthcare, in this paper we discuss our vision about agent-based digital twins, and we discuss a first case study, about the application of agent-based digital twins to the management of severe traumas.},

    abstract = {A library-based extension of Java, the simpA framework, introduced a new abstraction based on agent-oriented concepts. Agents are autonomous entities that cooperate by exploiting artifacts, representing resources that are dynamically created and shared by agents. In this paper we present a core calculus integrating techniques coming from the area of concurrency and from OO programming. The syntax of the calculus with its static and dynamic semantics are introduced through an example. The calculus aims to foster the formalization (and proof) of type soundness of simpA programs and the development of techniques for analyzing the computational behaviour of agents and artifacts.},

 @article{oliva-adaptation-jucs14,
    abstract = {This paper describes a Java-based framework for developing componentbased software systems supporting adaptation with logic laws and considering component interactions as a first-class aspect. On the one side, the framework makes it possible to specify the logic of interaction at the component-level, in terms of input and output interfaces, the events generated and observed by a component, and related information about the management of the control flow. On the other side, it is possible to specify the logic of interaction at the inter-component level, providing a modelling and linguistic support for designing and (dynamically) programming the glue among the components, enabling general forms of adaptation, observation and construction of the interaction space. As a result, the framework supports the adaptation of components at different levels: from interoperability among heterogeneous and unknown components, to the support for dynamic introduction, removal and update of components, to general coordination patterns, such as workflow. The framework uses first-order logic as the reference computational model for describing and defining the logic of interaction: the modalities adopted by components to interact, the adaptation laws gluing the components and the interaction events occurring in the system are expressed as facts and rules. They compose the (evolving) logic theories describing and defining the interaction at the system level, and can be observed and controlled at runtime to allow dynamic re-configurability.},

    abstract = {Intelligent agents have been a cornerstone of Artificial Intelligence (AI) since its early days—and received significant attention in the 1990s when the notion of autonomous agent was established, giving rise to research on Engineering Multi-Agent Systems (EMAS). Traditionally, this area has focused on theories, architectures, methodologies, paradigms, and languages for designing, implementing, and governing systems of autonomous agents. More recently, advances in Generative AI—and specifically large language models—have led to a new generation of agents and multi-agent systems, often referred to as Agentic AI. However, the conceptual bridges, overlaps, and complementarities between Agentic AI and traditional EMAS research are often unclear. The Agent Toolkits 2025 community session invited positions statements from senior members of the EMAS community to discuss these recent developments. This paper summarizes and integrates their contributions and outlines key directions for research on EMAS with Generative AI.},

    abstract = {Extending BDI agents with the ability to autonomously generate plans has long been a goal in the field of cognitive agent engineering to enhance their adaptability. Recent advances in GenAI are now opening new possibilities for plan generation, by leveraging the natural-language understanding, mean-end reasoning, and abstraction capabilities of LLMs. In this paper, we investigate the integration of GenAI-based plan generation into AgentSpeak(L) agents, and we analyse the implications of transferring knowledge between the LLM and the BDI agent, for the sake of dynamic plan generation. We propose a coherent framework where AgentSpeak(L) is extended with plan generation, and we model the boundaries of the generative process. We prototype our framework via the JaKtA BDI agent technology, and we methodologically assess the quality of the plans generated by LLMs of different sorts.},

    abstract = {Nowadays, smart mobile applications are a medium allowing more and more for developing (part of) complex software systems, featuring interactive behaviour and exhibiting different degrees of autonomy and flexibility. In agents and MAS literature, Personal Assistant Agents represent the area that mostly can benefit from the availability of frameworks allowing for easily developing native agent-based applications able to exploit features offered by smart mobile and wearable devices. This paper discusses the JaCa-Android framework, a version of JaCaMo redesigned to natively run over mobile devices equipped with Google Android operating system. Exposing native features to observe and perceive the real-time user context and act accordingly, the framework is oriented in particular to the development of smart mobile apps as BDI-based personal assistant agents offering a proper layer of abstraction for this specific purpose.},

 @inproceedings{spatiotemporaltuples-ecas2020,
    abstract = {Coordination is a fundamental problem in the engineering of collective adaptive systems (CAS). Prominent approaches in this context promote adaptivity and collective behaviour by founding coordination on local, decentralised interaction. This is usually enabled through abstractions such as collective interfaces, neighbour-based interaction, and attribute-based communication. Application designers, then, use such coordination mechanisms to enact collective adaptive behaviour in order to solve specific problems or provide specific services while coping with dynamic environments. In this paper, we consider the other way round: we argue that a CAS model can be used to provide support for high-level coordination models, simplifying their implementation and transferring to them the self-* properties it emergently fosters. As a motivating example, we consider the idea of supporting tuple-based coordination by Linda primitives such that tuples and operations have a position and extension in space and time. Then, we adopt an aggregate perspective, by which space-time is logically represented by a mobile ad-hoc network of devices, and show that coordination primitives can be implemented as true collective adaptive processes. We describe this model and a prototype implementation in the ScaFi aggregate programming framework, which is rooted in the so-called computational field paradigm.},

    abstract = {Distribution is one of the essential features characterizing multi-agent systems (MASs), giving developers the opportunity to seamlessly conceive and then engineer a physically distributed application as a MAS spread among different network nodes. Nevertheless, the current support given by state-of-the-art Agent Programming Languages (APLs) and related platforms for programming distributed multi-agent systems as well as for handling distribution when deploying, running, debugging the distributed MAS is still quite primitive. In this paper we tackle this problem by introducing simpAL, a new agent-oriented programming language and platform which has been conceived from the beginning to provide a more comprehensive support for programming, deploying and executing physically distributed MASs.},

    abstract = {The fundamental turn of software toward concurrency, distribution, interaction is calling for introducing further abstraction layers on top of those provided by mainstream programming paradigms to tackle more effectively the complexities that such turn implies. Accordingly, most of our research efforts are directed in the engineering of a new agent-based programming language called {\simpal} for investigating agent-oriented programming as a general purpose paradigm for developing modern software systems. In this paper we present the results of our efforts in using the Eclipse ecosystem for designing and developing a modular feature-rich agent-oriented Integrated Development Environment (IDE), in order to provide developers the adequate means to code, manipulate, inspect and debug simpAL applications.},

    abstract = {The extraordinary progress of mobile device technologies pushes for a new generation of smart mobile applications, featuring complex computational and interactive behaviour, exhibiting different degrees of autonomy and flexibility. This raises new challenges in mobile application programming, calling for programming tools and development platforms providing a proper level of abstraction to deal with such a new level of complexity. This demo shows an agent-oriented platform called JaCa-Android allowing to tackle the complexities related to the design of fore-coming smart mobile applications providing an agent-oriented level of abstraction for their design, programming and execution on top of the Android platform. This demo aims at investigating the adoption of agent-oriented programming – and in particular of agent-based programming languages rooted on a strong notion of agency – to tackle the complexities related to the design of fore-coming smart mobile applications. For doing this we present an agent-oriented platform called JaCa-Android, providing an agent-oriented level of abstraction to design, program and execute smart mobile applications on top of the Android platform.},

In this paper we support this claim in practice by discussing the use of a platform integrating two main agent programming technologies - Jason agent programming language and CArtAgO environment programming framework - to the development of Web Client applications. Following the cloud computing perspective, these kinds of applications will more and more replace desktop applications, exploiting the Web infrastructure as a common distributed operating system, raising however challenges that are not effectively tackled - we argue - by mainstream programming paradigms, such as the objectoriented one.},

An important example is given by mobile applications, which are getting a strong momentum given the larger and larger diffusion of powerful mobile systems and related application platforms. abstract = {Agent modularisation is a main issue in agent and multi-agent system programming. Existing solutions typically propose some kinds of constructs such as capabilities to group and encapsulate in well-defined modules inside the agent different kinds of agent features, that depend on the architecture or model adopted—examples are goals, beliefs, intentions, skills. In this paper we introduce a further perspective, which can be considered complimentary to existing approaches, which accounts for externalizing some of such functionalities into the computational environment where agents are (logically) situated. In this perspective, agent modules are realised as suitably designed artifacts that agents can dynamically exploit as external tools to enhance their action repertoire and, more generally, their capability to execute tasks. Then, to let agent (and agent programmers) exploit such capabilities abstracting from the low-level mechanics of artifact management and use, we exploit the dual notion of internalization, which consists in dynamically consulting and automatically embedding high-level usage protocols described in artifact manuals as agent plans. The idea is discussed providing some practical examples of use, based on CArtAgO as technology for programming artifacts and Jason agent platform to program the agents.},
