Towards Blockchain-based Coordination: A First Study with Linda and Ethereum

Theblockchainisapotentially-disruptivetechnologyalready impacting over diverse research activities, such as distributed databases, replicated state machines, and distributed consensus. There, the notion of smart contract is of particular interest as a way to spread compu- tations in a decentralised way. In the field of coordination models and languages, smart contracts have the potential to work as an effective way of designing and implementing fully-distributed coordination. As a meaningful case study along this line, in this paper we draw a mapping between the Ethereum blockchain and tuple-based coordination models, and discuss a proof-of-concept implementation of the archetypal Linda model based on Ethereum smart contracts.
